What happened on the night of Feb. 13,
1981 still haunts me. It was late at night
and I was on my way home from work. As I
was driving along, I noticed a young girl
who couldn't have been any older than 15
at the edge of Old Mission Road. It was
cold, and Id always thought the area was
kind of spooky, so I asked her if she
needed a ride home. She said yes. She told
me her name was Cindy Sue and that she
lived off Villamain Road. I wondered what
a girl her age was doing out so late. She
was quiet to the point of giving me
creeps. She said nothing as we drove
along, but I could see through the corner
of my eye she was looking at me.
We approached some old railroad tracks. As
we went across, Cindy Sue started
squirming in her seat. I asked her what
was wrong. She said "nothing." As we
arrived at her house, she remained in the
car. I quickly assumed she was having
problems at home, so I told her I would
talk to her parents. I rang the doorbell
and an elderly man and woman answered the
door. I expected her parents to be much
younger. They both looked at me as if I
was crazy when I said Cindy Sue was in my
car. The elderly man became upset and told
me to get off his property or he would
call the police. As I walked back to the
car, he yelled, "Quit doing this to us.
Let Cindy Sue rest in peace."
When I got back to the car, Cindy Sue was
gone. I never heard the car door open or
shut. She just vanished. I remember that
when she got in the car, she locked the
door and fastened her seat belt. To my
disbelief, the door was still locked and
the set belt still fastened. Then I
remembered why Id thought the area was
unsettling. Several years before, a bus
accident in the area had killed several
children. As a memorial to the children,
the street names in the neighborhood had
been changed to those of the students who
had died in the bus accident: Richey Otis,
Bobbie Allen, Shane, Emilio, Guerra and
others.
As I drove out of the neighborhood, I
noticed the name of the street right
before the old railroad tracks: Cindy
