Here's a tale from Lori Seligmann, a regular on the Alt.folklore.ghost-stories discussion list. Check out Obiwan's page (in the links section) if you want to join. This is one is really, really, really creepy.

Well, I've mentioned seeing ghosts as a child on the ghost discussion list. All this talking about it lately had me remembering again. The other night, I was in bed and letting my thoughts drift to the first apparition. I remember I was 2 1/2 years old (yes, I remember back that far), and I had woken up from a nap to find my mom taking a nap in her room. She wasn't feeling well. Being the type to entertain myself if need be, I went back to my room and climbed on top of my toy chest, under the window. I pulled the curtains back and peeped out. From the light I would say it was about 4 p.m. We lived in a triplex. Our unit was in the middle looking down the driveway and at the end next to the mail boxes I saw a man(?) The figure was all black, like a black hole, but still the figure of a man. I didn't know who or what it was, but I remember letting out the most blood-curdling scream. My parents came rushing for me, but when I tried to explain what I saw ("It's Mr. Death, he's going to get me! It's Mr. Death!), they just got annoyed and told me to quit the racket, and that it was just a nightmare. I tried to explain that I was wide-awake and that it was real (I was quite articulate for my age). But they just wouldn't believe me. I kept looking out of the window, but nothing unusual was there. So, maybe they were right. What did I know?

Epilogue; So, I started thinking about that apparition the other night. Why had I thought it was Mr. Death? I couldn't think of anyone that I knew of dying around that time, did I? And then I remembered something horrible. My mother was pregnant. All I knew about that time was that a baby was coming soon and then a baby wasn't coming. No one ever said to me, "Lori, the baby died before it was born". The memories of my mom getting very sick (later that night or next day), the adults rushing her off to the hospital, my grandparents coming from out of town to take care of me and help my mom. Well, it was never brought up to me again. I JUST made the connection two days ago I thought Mr. Death was coming for me.

But I was wrong.

I have to say this is one of the most disturbing stories I think I've been sent yet. If you ever see that shadow again...But then again, how can you run from Death?
